Procedure

2-[4-(N-propyl-N-pyrid-2-ylamino)butylamino]-5-(2-methoxy pyrid-4-ylmethyl)pyrimid-4-one (1.8 g) in ethanol (50 ml) saturated with hydrogen chloride was heated under reflux for 40 hrs. After stripping, the residue was triturated with ether. The residue was taken up in water, basified and extracted with ether, acidified to neutral pH and extracted with chloroform. After stripping, the residue was crystallized from methanol to give 2-[4-(N-propyl-N-pyrid-2-ylamino)butylamino]-5-(2-hydroxypyrid-4-ylmethyl)pyrimid-4-one 1.4 H2O, 0.80 g (43%) m.p. 138°-140° C.
