Procedure
4-Methoxy-N,N-dibutylaniline (9.2 g) in 48% hydrobromic acid (50 mL) was heated under reflux for 2.5 hours and the acid then removed under reduced pressure. Addition of water and neutralization with solid sodium bicarbonate gave a precipitate which was filtered off, washed with water and recrystallized from methanol-ether to give 4-hydroxy-N,N-dibutylaniline.
