Procedure
A solution of the acid of Step E, above (2.0 g, 6.4 mmol) in 20 mL of methanol containing a few mg of p-toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate is heated at reflux for 3 hours. The solvent is evaporated in vacuo and the residue dissolved in ethyl acetate. The organic phase is washed with saturated NaHCO3, brine and dried (MgSO4). Removal of solvent affords the product (1.9 g, 90%) as a brown foam. It is used as such in the next step.
