Procedure

A 250 mL round bottomed flask was charged with ethyl 4-(4-methoxybenzyloxy)benzoate (11.45 g, 60.18 mmol) and ethanol (110 mL). Hydrazine monohydrate was then added and the mixture was placed under reflux for 48 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness and chloroform (150 mL) was added. The mixture was decanted and the insoluble white residue was washed once more with chloroform to remove traces of starting material. The white solid (5.3 g, 32%) was dried in vacuo and 1H NMR analysis was consistent with the title compound. 1H NMR (DMSO d6, 400 MHz) δ 9.6 (br s, 1 H), 7.77 (d, J=9 Hz, 2 H), 7.36 (d, J=9 Hz, 2 H), 7.03 (d, J=9 Hz, 1 H), 6.94 (d, J=9 Hz, 1 H), 5.05 (s, 2 H), 3.74.
