A mixture of 1,1-dimethylethyl 7-{3-[(phenylmethyl)amino]-3-thioxopropanoyl}-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzoxazepine-4(5H)-carboxylate (155 mg, 0.35 mmol), hydrazine monohydrate (66 mg, 0.59 mmol), acetic acid and Lawesson's reagent (63 mg, 1.0 mmol) in ethanol (5 mL) was stirred at 78° C. for one hour. The reaction mixture was cooled, concentrated and the residue purified directly by silica gel chromatography (5% methanol in dichlomethane) to give 1,1-dimethylethyl 7-{5-[(phenylmethyl)amino]-1H-pyrazol-3-yl}-2,3-dihydro-1,4-benzoxazepine-4(5H)-carboxylate (92 mg, 62% yield). MS (EI) for C24H28N4O3: 421 (MH+).
