To an ice-cooled solution of 2-bromo-1-(2,5-dichlorophenyl)ethanone (0.10 g, 0.37 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (8 mL) was added potassium phthalimide (76 mg, 0.41 mmol). The mixture was warmed to room temperature for 2 hours. The resultant mixture was then poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated. Recrystallization with diethyl ether afforded 2-(2-(2,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione as a white solid. (110 mg, 88% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): 7.92-7.94 (m, 2H), 7.78-7.80 (m, 2H), 7.72 (m, 1H), 7.45-7.46 (m, 2H), 5.08 (s, 2H).
