Procedure
Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.56 g, 8.1 mmol) and sodium acetate (0.66 g, 8.1 mmol) were added to a suspension of 7-bromo-9-methyl-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-carbazol-1-one (1.5 g, 5.4 mmol) in EtOH (14 mL) and H2O (5.0 mL), and the resulting suspension was heated at reflux for 18 h. The reaction was cooled and concentrated to dryness. The resulting solid was triturated with MeOH (100 mL), and the solids were dried to yield the title compound (1.4 g, 90%) as an off-white powder: 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 11.14 (s, 1H), 7.66 (s, 1H), 7.47 (d, J=8.5 Hz, 1H), 7.15 (dd, J=8.5, 1.0 Hz, 1H), 3.95 (s, 3H), 2.79-2.72 (m, 4H), 1.88-1.83 (m, 2H).
