A solution of 2-methoxy-4-phenethylpyrimidine (0.50 g, 2.3 mmol) in concentrated HCl (4.0 mL) was heated under reflux for 16 h. The reaction solution was cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filter cake was washed with water and dried under reduced pressure to give the title compound (0.34 g, 74%) as an off-white solid: 1H NMR (500 MHz, CD3OD) δ 8.52 (d, J=6.5 Hz, 1H), 7.33-7.24 (m, 5H), 6.78 (d, J=6.0 Hz, 1H), 3.12-3.07 (m, 4H).
