Procedure
Compound (G) was dissolved in methanol (120 ml.) and the stirred solution treated sequentially with potassium cyanide (1.82g., 0.028m), methylamine hydrochloride (2.03g., 0.03m.), and water (20 ml.). The sides of the flask were rinsed down with an additional 5 ml of methanol, the mixture covered with a nitrogen atmosphere and allowed to stir overnight at room temperature. The mixture was then concentrated in vacuo to a slurry. This was distributed between methylene chloride (300 ml.) and water (400 ml.), separated, and the aqueous layer re-extracted 2x with methylene chloride. The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to yield compound (H) as a waxy solid (3.lg.). It was used directly in the next step.
