Procedure
n-Butyllithium (50 ml) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 3-benzylthio-1-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole (31.8 g) in dry tetrahydrofuran (200 ml) at -70° C. Bromine (19 g) was added and the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and then quenched with water. After washing with brine, the organic phase was dried and evaporated to give a yellow oil. Purification by chromatography over silica with dichloromethane and petroleum ether afforded the desired product as a pale yellow oil.
