Procedure

A suspension of 2.5 g of ethyl 1-cyclopropyl-6,8-difluoro-7-[2-(N-ethoxycarbonyl-N-methylaminomethyl)morpholino]-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate in 20 ml of 10% aqueous hydrochloric acid is refluxed for 12 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated under reduced pressure, and to the obtained crystals is added ethanol. The crystals are collected by filtration with suction, washed with ethanol and then dried to give 1.6 g of 1-cyclopropyl-6,8-difluoro-7-[2-(methylaminomethyl)morpholino]-1,4-dihydro-4-oxoquinoline-3-[carboxylic acid. hydrochloride in 73% yield, melting at 289°-290° C. with decomposition.
