Procedure

0.646 g of 4,5-dihydro-7-oxo-8-phenyl-7H-thieno[2,3-a]quinolizine-10-carboxylic acid was dissolved in 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The solution was treated at -15° with 0.4 ml of a 10M solution of borane/methyl sulfide in tetrahydrofuran, left to warm to room temperature and subsequently heated under reflux for 2 hours. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was treated with methanol and evaporated in vacuo. The mixture was heated to boiling in 2N hydrochloric acid for a short time and extracted with chloroform. The organic extracts was washed with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo. After recrystallization from ethyl acetate/diethyl ether there was obtained pure 4,5-dihydro-10-methyl-8-phenyl-7H-thieno-[2,3-a]quinolizin-7-one of m.p. 80.5°-81°.
