Procedure

16.23 g of 6-cyano-2-(p-ethoxycarbonylphenyl)pyridine is hydrogenated at atmospheric pressure in 254 ml of methanol with 12.9 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 2.63 g of 10% palladium on charcoal until 2 molar equivalents of hydrogen have been consumed. Sodium methoxide (6.9 g) is added and the catalyst is filtered off. The solvent is evaporated. The residue is redissolved in 20 ml of methylene chloride and the salts are removed by filtration. Evaporation of the solvent yields a solid which is recrystallized from chloroform to yield the title compound b), m.p. 141°-143°.
