A mixture of 3-chloro-4-fluoroaniline (1) (87.3 g) and diethyl ethoxymethylene malonate (129.7 g) and Dowtherm (700 mL) (diphenyl ether) was refluxed for 4 h. It was cooled and the resulting solid was removed by filtration. The solid was recrystallized from DMF to give 55.O g (4). m.p.=>300° C.
