Procedure

A solution of 1.0 mL trifluoroacetic acid and 1.2 g (4.08 mmol) of 1,1-dimethylethyl[2-(2-cyano-4-fluorophenoxy)-1-methylethyl]carbamate in 10 mL methylene chloride was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 days. Solvent was removed and the residue was taken up in aqueous Na2CO3 and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated and washed with water and brine. Drying (MgSO4)and removal of solvent gave 650 mg of 2-(2-aminopropoxy)-5-fluorobenzonitrile as an oil.
