Procedure

A solution of Example 38B (250 mg, 0.200 mmol) in glacial acetic acid (4 mL) at ambient temperature was treated slowly with acetic acid (6 mL) containing 30% hydrogen peroxide (4 mL), and the reaction was stirred for 30 minutes. The precipitate which formed was filtered off, washed with water, and crystallized from ethanol. The salt was dissolved in ethyl acetate and neutralized with saturated aqueous sodium carbonate solution. The organic solution was washed with brine (5 mL), dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated to provide a white solid. Recrystallization from ethanol/diethyl ether provided 71 mg of the desired product as a white solid.
