Procedure
A suspension of 4-chlorobenzamide (2.61 g, 16.8 mmol), paraformaldehyde (0.50 g, 16.8 mmol), benzotriazole (2.00 g, 16.8mmol), and MgSO4 (2.00 g, 16.6 mmol) in toluene (50 mL) was treated with p-toluenesulfonic acid (168 mg, 0.88 mmol). The mixture was heated at reflux for 4 hours, cooled to ambient temperature, filtered and concentrated to dryness. The crude material was purified by trituration with diethyl ether to provide 2.11 g of the desired product as a white solid.
