835 mg of Mg are suspended in 5 ml of abs. THF. A solution of 2.0 g of 4-benzyloxybenzyl chloride in 5 ml of abs. tetrahydrofuran is subsequently added dropwise. When the addition is complete, the cloudy solution is stirred at room temperature for a further 1 hour, a solution of 1.73 g of ethyl 2-cyano-3-phenylacrylate in 10 ml of abs. toluene is subsequently added, and the mixture is refluxed for 16 hours. The solvent is removed, and conventional work-up gives ethyl 4-(4-benzyloxyphenyl)-2-cyano-3-phenylbutyrate (“AA”).
