Procedure
To a stirred solution of 2-nitro-10-oxo-dibenzo[b,f]thiepine (0.54 g, 2.00 mmol) and 1-piperonylpiperazine (2.04 g, 9.26 mmol) in toluene (15 mL) was added titanium tetrachloride (0.24 mL, 2.2 mmol) at room temperature under argon. The resulted mixture was heated at reflux for 3.5h and then cooled down to room temperature. The whole mixture was poured into a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (50 mL). After separation, the aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane (2×50 mL). The combined organic solution was dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to dryness. The residue was subjected to column chromatography using ethyl acetate/hexanes (1/2) as eluent. Thus 0.161 g (17%) of the title compound was obtained as a yellow solid; m.p. 188°-190° C.; MS 474 (M+ +1).
