Procedure

In a 500 ml round bottom flask were mixed 1-methyl-1-(2,2-dimethoxyethyl)-3-(5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) urea (8.0 g, 0.03 mol), water (300 ml) and conc. hydrochloric acid (4 ml). The mixture was stirred vigorously and was heated to reflux for ~1 hour. The mixture was cooled and filtered to give a white solid product which was dried in vacuo, 5.3 g, 76.1% yield, mp 243° C. dec. NMR (NaOD in D2O) 6.0 (t, 1H), 3.5 (d, 2H), 3.0 (S, 3H). IR: (KBr) 3400, 3200, 2900, 1700, 1550, 1500, 1450, 1360, 1275, 1245, 1100, 1080, 1050, 1000, 900, 775, 725.
