Procedure
A mixture of the product from step (a) (3.0 g), 10% Pd/C (750 mg) and 2N aqu. HCl (4.7 ml) in ethanol/water (55 ml, 3:2 v/v) was hydrogenated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure for 24 hours (uptake 1100 ml). The mixture was filtered through celite, the residue washed with hot water and the filtrate evaporated in vacuo to give the desired product as a yellow oil (2.9 g). The 200 MHz 1H NMR and MS were consistent with the proposed structure.
