Procedure

3.2 ml (0.031 mol) of aqueous 30% hydrogen peroxide, dissolved in 15 ml of methanol, was added dropwise, while vigorously stirring, to a solution of 1.97 gm (0.007 mol) of (E)-2-[(ethylamino)phenylmethylene]-benzo[b]thiophen-3(2H)-one and 10 ml of an aqueous 16% solution of titanium (III) chloride in 100 ml of methanol and 20 ml of water. The course of the reaction was monitored by thin-layer chromatography. After the reaction had ended, the mixture was diluted with 300 ml of water, and the precipitate thus obtained was suction-filtered off and then recrystallized twice from ethanol. 1.75 gm (84% of theory) of pale yellow crystals, m.p. 183°-185° C., were obtained.
