Procedure
A stirred portion (0.63 g, 0.0007 m) of the acid from Step D above in an oxygen-free atmosphere is set in an oil-bath set at 210° C. (and rising to 230° C.) and kept there until carbon dioxide evolution ceases. Chromatography of the residue obtained, using a silica gel column and 25% ethyl acetate/hexane as eluant yields pure ethyl 5-(2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolizin-5-oyl)-6-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolizine-1-carboxylate.
