Benzyl alcohol (0.31 g, 3.0 mmol) was added to a stirred mixture of (S)-3-(benzoylaminomethyl)-5-methylhexanoic acid 4 (0.78 g, 3.0 mmol), 1,3-dicyclo-hexylcarbodiimide (0.61 g, 3.0 mmol), and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (0.36 g, 3.0 mmol) in dichloromethane (40 ml) and the mixture was stirred for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed (SiO2, heptane-ether, 1:0 to 75:25) to give 5(0.83 g, 79%).
