Procedure

Add 1.85 g. of 8-acetyl-10,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,f]thiepin-3-carboxylic acid to a stirred mixture of 370 ml. of 50% aqueous sodium hypochlorite and 13 ml. of 20% aqueous sodium hydroxide at 60° C. Raise the temperature to 85° C. and stir for 30 minutes. Pour the mixture over ice and add sodium metabisulfite Acidify with 6N hydrochloric acid. Separate the solids by filtration wash with water and dry to obtain the title product. (m.p. 350°-352° C.)
