Procedure

A solution of benzyl 5-(2-aminophenyl)-2-phthalimido-4-penteneoate (10.7 g) in ethanol (500 ml) is hydrogenated at atmospheric pressure with 10% palladium on charcoal (2 g) until uptake ceases. The catalyst is filtered off and the filtrate evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue is triturated with ethyl acetate to give 5-(2-aminophenyl)-2-phthalimidopentanoic acid, mp 258°-260°, used without further purification in the next synthetic step.

Workup

  1. filtrationThe catalyst is filtered off
  2. customthe filtrate evaporated under reduced pressure
  3. customThe residue is triturated with ethyl acetate
