Procedure
150 mg of finely powdered 3 Å molecular sieves, 350 mg (3 mM) of N-methylmorpholine n-oxide, and 70 mg (0.2) of tetrapropylammonium perrhuthenate are added. To a solution of 576 mg (2 mM) of the carbinol, 3-hydroxymethyl-7-bromo-4-aza-9-fluorenone, prepared as described in Example 38, in 20 mL of dry methylene chloride under nitrogen at R.T. the reaction mixture is stirred 15 minutes, diluted with 20 mL of ethyl acetate and filtered through a bed of silica gel, which is washed further with ethyl acetate 5 times. The combined filtrates are concentrated to give the desired aldehyde as yellow solid.
