In 30 mi of concentrated hydrochloric acid was dissolved 1.73 g of the 1-acetyl-4-(4-dimethylaminobenzoylmethyl)piperidine prepared in Example 39 and the mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 15 hours. The solvent was then distilled off and the residue was recrystallized from ethanol-ethyl acetate to give 1.7 g of colorless crystals melting at 251°-255° C.
