Procedure

To an ice-cold solution of 4-(2,4-dimethylheptanyl)-5-methoxy-2-methyl-4-pentenoic acid (11) (1.85 g, 6.85 mmol) in 95 ml diethyl ether in a 250 ml flask fitted with a magnetic stirrer and a dropping funnel, 25 ml of a 70 volume percent aqueous solution of perchloric acid was added slowly under a nitrogen atmosphere. After the addition was completed, the solution was stirred at room temperature for ten hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice water, the organic layer separated, and the aqueous layer thoroughly extracted with three 100 ml portions of ether. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo to yield the aldehyde acid 4-(2,4-dimethylheptanyl)-2-methyl-5-oxo-pentanoic acid (12) as a yellow oil.
