Procedure

A solution of methyl 5,6-dimethoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)indole-2-carboxylate (0.25 g) in tetrahydrofuran (10 ml) was dropwise added to a suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4) (56 mg) in tetrahydrofuran (10 ml) at room temperature, followed by stirring for 2 hours at room temperature. After adding water, the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The precipitated crystals were collected by filtration and recrystallized from acetone to give 2-hydroxymethyl-5,6-dimethoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-indole (0.145 g, 63%) as colorless prisms.
