Procedure

A mixture of methyl 5,6-dimethoxy-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)indole-2-carboxylate (0.54 g), 2N-NaOH (10 ml) and methanol (25 ml) was refluxed for 3 hours under stirring. The reaction mixture was poured into water, acidified with 6N-HCl and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. The precipitated crystals were collected by filtration and recrystallized from methanol to give 5,6-dimethoxy-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)indole-2-carboxylic acid (0.443 g, 85%) as pale red prisms.
