Alternatively, to a solution of benzylsulfonyl chloride (101.4 mg, 0.53 mmol) and 2-(3-(N′,N″-di(t-butoxycarbonyl)guanidino)phenyl)-2-((1R)-(1-amino-2-methylpropyl)(hydroxy)-phosphinoyloxy)ethanoic acid methyl ester (301.4 mg, 0.54 mmol) in 4 mL of methylene chloride was added triethylamine (0.13 mL, 0.93 mmol). After stirring at ambient temperature for 1.5 hours, the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to give a yellow oil, 2-(3-(N′,N″-di(t-butoxy-carbonyl)guanidino)phenyl)-2-((1R)-(1-(benzylsulfonyl)amino-2-methylpropyl)-(hydroxy)phosphinoyloxy)ethanoic acid methyl ester, which was used without further purification in the following step.
