Tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium (0.8 g) was added to a mixture of benzeneboronic acid (3.1 g), 5-bromo-2-fluoronitrobenzene (5 g) and 22 mL of 2M sodium carbonate solution in toluene (50 mL) and ethanol (50 mL). The mixture was heated to reflux for 2 hours, concentrated, and the residue was extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water, brine, dried, and concentrated to give a yellow oil. The oil was purified by column chromatography on silica gel in 5% ethyl acetate in hexane to give 4.75 g (96% yield) of 4-fluoro-3-nitrobiphenyl as a yellow oil.
