PROCEDURE

To a mixture of 19 g of iron powder, 60 ml of acetic acid, and 6 ml of water was added dropwise a solution of 19.12 g of methyl [2-{4-fluoro-5-[3-methyl-2,6-dioxo-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyri midin-1-yl]-2-nitrophenoxy}phenoxy]acetate in 60 ml of acetic acid under ice cooling. After completion of the dropwise addition, the temperature was increased to room temperature, and the mixture was stirred for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered through Celite, and the filtrate was diluted with ethyl acetate. The mixture was washed with water, saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel chromatography to give 15.16 g of methyl [2-{2-amino-4-fluoro-5-[3-methyl-2,6-dioxo-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-1-yl]phenoxy}phenoxy]acetate.
