Reaction Steps
A solution of 20.0 g (81.5 mmol) of 2-methylsulfanyl-4′-nitrobiphenyl in 150 ml of glacial acetic acid is treated with 66 g of sodium perborate trihydrate and heated at 60° C. with stirring for 3 days. The reaction mixture is added to water, and the precipitate is filtered off and recrystallized from petroleum ether/ethyl acetate. A yellowish solid is obtained; FAB 278
