Ammonium formate (1.7 g) and 10% palladium on charcoal were added to a solution of (RS) methyl 3-{6-[2-(3-hydroxy-4-nitrophenyl)-acetylamino]-pyridin-3-yl}-butanoate (180 mg, Reference Example 15) in ethanol (15 mL). The mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 1 hour, then cooled to room temperature and then filtered through a pad of diatomaceous earth. The filter pad was washed with ethanol. The combined filtrate and washings were evaporated and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate. This solution was washed with water, then dried over magnesium sulphate and then evaporated to give the title compound (134 mg) as a pale brown oil which was used without further purification.
