To a solution of 4-chloro-3-methyl-1-(2-pyridinyl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline (6.50 g, 17.9 mmol) in ethanol (300 mL), 6N hydrochloric acid (10 mL, 60 mmol) was added and the mixture was heated under reflux for 5 hours. The solution was allowed to cool to room temperature, and the resulting crystals were collected by filtration. The crystals were washed with ethanol and air dried, and recrystallized from ethanol to give the title compound (4.69 g, 76% yield).
