Procedure
To a solution of methyl 3-methyl-4-oxo-1-(2-pyridinyl)-4,9-dihydro-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline-6-carboxylate (0.96 g, 2.87 mmol) in ethanol (20 mL), was added 2N sodium hydroxide (20 mL), and the mixture was heated under reflux for 1 hour. The solution was allowed to cool to room temperature, and made acidic by the addition of 1N hydrochloric acid, and the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration. The crude crystals were recrystallized from chloroform/methanol to give the title compound (0.87 g, 93% yield).
