Procedure

A mixture of 2.04 g of 4(S)-(3-methanesulfonyloxy-2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-2,2-dimethyl-oxazolidine-3-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester and 2.17 g of sodium cyanide in 12 ml of dimethylsulfoxide is heated to 135° C. for 15 hours. The mixture is cooled to room temperature and diluted with water and ethyl acetate. The layers are separated and the aqueous layer is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers are dried over sodium sulphate, filtered and concentrated. The title compound is obtained as a colourless oil from the residue by means of flash chromatography (SiO2 60 F). Rf=0.32 (1:1 EtOAc-heptane); Rt=4.82 (gradient I).
