To a solution of cyclopropanecarboxylic acid [4-(3-cyano-6-ethoxy-1-ethyl-1H-indol-2-yl)-phenyl]-amide (4.4 g, 11.8 mmol) in 60 mL of DCM is added BBr3 (6.65 mL, 70 mmol) at −10° C. After the addition, the mixture is stirred for 3 h at 0° C. Then aqueous NaHCO3 is added to the mixture carefully until it becomes basic. The crude solid is collected by filtration to give 91% of cyclopropanecarboxylic acid [4-(3-cyano-1-ethyl-6-hydroxy-1H-indol-2-yl)-phenyl]-amide and is used for the next step without further purification.
