A solution of 5-((3,5-dimethoxyphenylamino)methylene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione (9.23 g, 30.0 mmol) in diphenyl ether was heated at 200° C. for 20 min. It was cooled down to RT. Hexane was added and the mixture was stirred at RT for 30 mins. The solvent was removed to furnish 5,7-dimethoxyquinolin-4-ol as a light brown solid, which was used for next step without further purification. MS: m/z=[M+H]+. 206.2 Calc'd for C11H11NO3: 205.2.
