Reaction Steps
The ester 5 (180 mg, 0.56 mmol) was suspended in ethanol (5 ml). 1M KOH (1 ml) was added and the resulting mixture heated at 80 C. A homogenous solution was obtained within minutes. After 2 h, the reaction mixture was cooled and acidified with 1M HCl. The ethanol was removed under reduced pressure and water was added to the residue. The mixture was filtered and the residue washed well with water and dried to give the acid 6.
