To a solution of 2-(2,3-dichlorobenzyl)-3-oxopentanenitrile (1.2 g, 4.7 mmol) in EtOH (10 mL) was added hydrazine hydrate (285 mg, 5.7 mmol) and stirred at 90° C. for 20 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column (PE:EA=10:1) to give the titled compound (500 mg, 36% over two steps); LC/MS: MS (ES+) m/e 270 (MH+); 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 1.16 (t, J=7.5 Hz, 3H), 2.53 (q, J=7.5 Hz, 2H), 3.78 (s, 2H), 4.26 (s, 2H), 6.94-6.97 (m, 1H), 7.10 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 7.32-7.35 (m, 1H).
