A mixture of methyl 3′-acetyl-5′-chloro-3-fluoro-2′-methoxy-6′-methylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (1.2 g, 3.4 mmol) and 3.75 M sodium hydroxide in water (10 mL, 38 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was neutralized with HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was used directly in next step (704 mg, 61%). LCMS calculated for C17H15ClFO4 (M+H)+: m/z=337.1. found: 337.1.
