461 μl of methyl fluorosulfonate was added, whilst ice-cooling, to a solution of 1.71 g of (6S, 8S)-8-(4-methoxybenzylthio)-4-methyl-5-oxo-1,4-diazabicyclo-[4.3.0]nonane dissolved in 60 ml of methylene chloride, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. At the end of this time, the mixture was diluted with diethyl ether, and the resulting crystals were collected by filtration and dried under reduced pressure, to afford 2.09 g of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 208°-210° C.
