Procedure

A mixture of trimethyl pyrone 1 (113 mg, 0.51 mmol), hydroxylamine hydrochloride (707 mg, 10.2 mmol), sodium acetate (835 mg, 10.2 mmol), water (1 mL), and ethanol (2 mL) was heated to reflux for 8 hr. After the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, filtered, and the filtrate was concentrated under diminished pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column. Elution with 5:1 ethyl acetate/methanol gave 3-heptyl-1-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylpyridin-4(1H)-one (CPD-6): yield 63 mg (51%); silica gel TLC Rf 0.35 (3:1 ethyl acetate/methanol); 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.84-0.88 (m, 3H), 1.24-1.45 (m, 10H), 2.36 (s, 3H), 2.47 (s, 3H), 2.60 (t, 2H, J=7.6 Hz) and 6.73 (s, 1H).
