A solution of 3-(3,3-dimethylbut-1-ynyl)-5-nitropyridin-2-amine (0.4 g, 1.8 mmol) and TBAF (1.9 g, 7.3 mmol) in THF (10 mL) was heated at reflux overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness under vacuum, and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate (20 mL). The organic layer was washed with water, brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under vacuum to afford 2-tert-butyl-5-nitro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine (0.25 g, 63%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 11.15 (brs, 1H), 9.20 (s, J=2.0 Hz, 1H), 8.70 (d, J=2.0 Hz, 1H), 6.43 (d, J=1.6 Hz, 1H), 1.51 (s, 9H).
