Hydrochloric acid gas was bubbled into a stirred solution of benzyl 4-(4-(cyanomethyl)pyridin-2-yl)piperazine-1-carboxylate (500 mg, 1.5 mmol) in dry MeOH (10 mL) for 5 h at 0° C., and then concentrated at 10° C. to give the crude product, which was used directly for the next step. MS (ES+) C20H24N4O3 requires: 368, found: 369 [M+H]+.
