A solution of 3-amino-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzonitrile (Intermediate 28, 2.20 g, 11.82 mmol) and di-isopropylethylamine (2.27 mL, 13.0 mmol) in dichloromethane (40 mL) was cooled in an ice-water bath before the addition of 2-chloro-2-oxoethyl acetate (1.40 mL, 13.0 mmol) dropwise. The reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 4 hours. To the reaction was added 2-chloro-2-oxoethyl acetate (0.14 mL) and the reaction stirred at room temperature for a further 18 hours. The reaction was diluted with DCM (100 mL) and the solution washed with 2N HCl (75 mL) and NaHCO3 (75 mL), collected via a hydrophobic frit and the solvent removed to yield the title compound as an orange oil (3.7 g)
