Thionyl chloride (4.25 g, 3.57 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of 5-[5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-tetrazol-1-yl]-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzonitrile (Intermediate 40, 8.0 g, 29.7 mmol) in toluene (200 mL) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and then heated to reflux for 4 hr. The mixture was diluted with EtOAc and washed with ice-water, and saturated NaHCO3, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the crude product. This was purified by column chromatography (100-200 mesh silica gel), eluting with 20%-40% ethyl acetate/pet ether to give the title compound (5.35 g) as a white powder.
